Thanks to google mobilegeddon, a lot of websites on the internet made themselves mobile friendly. But what is the difference between mobile friendly, responsive and adaptive website design? Mobile friendly sites are not designed for mobile device but there are a completely different version of site that work on different devices.
But the mobile version is completely different from the desktop version. In case of responsive website, the site makes use of the same code and same design – it is just that it adapts itself to the mobile screen resolution and makes elements like buttons bigger. Even if your website has multi column layout, it will be rendered as single column layout. So every responsive site is mobile friendly but not vice versa.
Now what is the difference between adaptive and responsive design – responsive sites adjust to the layout and resolution while the adaptive website design will only adapt at select points. So let us say that the mobile design will trigger at 800 pixel or less width otherwise full version is shown.
